Updated July 21, 2026

Replacing a thumbnail is one of the fastest ways to improve click-through rate on an underperforming video. YouTube lets you swap images anytime after upload—as long as your channel meets the custom thumbnail requirements.

Before you start

Confirm these basics:

  • Channel verification: Custom uploads require a verified phone number. Go to YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility.
  • Correct size: Export at 1280×720 (16:9) under 2 MB. See YouTube Thumbnail Size for full specs.
  • Honest preview: The image must represent the video. Misleading thumbnails violate YouTube’s spam policies.

Change a thumbnail on desktop

  1. Open YouTube Studio.
  2. Click Content in the left menu.
  3. Hover the video and click the pencil icon (Details).
  4. Scroll to the Thumbnail section.
  5. Choose one of:
    • Upload thumbnail — select your JPG or PNG file.
    • Auto-generated — pick a frame YouTube extracted from the video.
  6. Click Save in the top-right corner.

Your new image replaces the previous thumbnail immediately in Studio. Public feeds may take longer to refresh.

Change a thumbnail on mobile

The YouTube Studio app supports thumbnail changes on many accounts:

  1. Open the YouTube Studio app.
  2. Tap Content and select the video.
  3. Tap the pencil icon to edit.
  4. Tap the current thumbnail image.
  5. Upload a new file or select an auto-generated frame.
  6. Tap Save.

If upload is greyed out, finish phone verification on desktop first.

Use Test & Compare (A/B testing)

Eligible channels can run official thumbnail tests without manually swapping files. Read How to A/B Test YouTube Thumbnails for the full workflow.
